- Who pays transfer duty?
- The buyer pays transfer duty to SARS before the property can be registered in their name. Properties bought from a VAT-registered developer usually carry VAT instead of transfer duty.
- Is there a transfer duty exemption?
- Yes. Properties below the first SARS bracket threshold pay no transfer duty. The calculator uses the current brackets from our legislation centre.
- Are the attorney fees exact?
- No. Conveyancing and bond registration fees are set by each attorney, usually with reference to a guideline tariff. Treat the fee figures as a rough estimate and ask your conveyancer for a quote.
- What does the bond cost include?
- The estimate includes a bond attorney fee, VAT, the bank initiation fee, the Deeds Office levy and estimated administration expenses. Your bank and attorney may quote different amounts.
- Why are VAT and the Deeds Office levy separate?
- VAT applies to the attorney fee. The Deeds Office levy is a government registration charge and is not VATable, so it is shown separately.
