- How much notice must a tenant give?
- For a month-to-month lease, one calendar month's written notice is standard. A tenant may cancel a fixed-term lease early under section 14 of the Consumer Protection Act with 20 business days' written notice, but a reasonable cancellation penalty may apply.
- How much notice must a landlord give?
- The landlord must give the notice set out in the lease, and for a fixed-term lease under the CPA must remind the tenant 40 to 80 business days before expiry. Evicting a tenant who stays on requires a court order under the PIE Act.
- How should I deliver the notice?
- Deliver it in writing and keep proof: hand delivery with a signed acknowledgement, registered post, or email if the lease allows it.
